Negli anni ’70, Benriach ha rotto con la tradizione dello Speyside tornando a distillare whisky in piccoli lotti secondo lo stile antico del XIX secolo, utilizzando orzo maltato affumicato con torba delle Highlands. Questa torba, ricca di legno, conferisce ai whisky torbati Benriach note dolci e affumicate distintive. Benriach Smoky Quarter Cask è stato creato da una combinazione di spirito torbato e non torbato; inizialmente maturato in botti ex-bourbon, subisce poi una seconda maturazione in quartieri di botte su misura. Queste botti più piccole permettono una maggiore interazione tra il legno e lo spirito, intensificando la maturazione per una maggiore profondità e ricchezza di gusto, creando strati di frutta matura, fumo fresco di legno e vaniglia speziata, con note finali di fumo morbido e rovere nocciolato. Il tutto in perfetto equilibrio.

In the early 1970s, Benriach broke convention in Speyside by returning to distilling batches of whisky in the old, 19th century style, using malted barley smoked with Highland peat. This wood rich Highland peat imparts distinctly sweet and smoky notes into Benriach peated whiskies. Benriach Smoky Quarter Cask has been crafted from a combination of unpeated and peated spirit; first matured in bourbon barrels, then undergoing a second maturation in bespoke quarter casks. These smaller quarter casks allow more interaction between the wood and the spirit, intensifying maturation for depth and richness of flavour, to create layers of ripe fruit, fresh wood smoke and spiced vanilla, with finishing notes of mellow smoke and nutty oak. All in perfect balance.
