Mr. Jack Daniel founded his distillery in 1866, making it the oldest registered distillery in America. Jack Daniel's is made to all bourbon quality standards, but it undergoes an extra step: it is softened drop by drop through three feet of sugared maple hardwood charcoal. This makes Jack Daniel's a Tennessee Whiskey and not a bourbon. After softening, Jack Daniel's whiskey matures in new charred American white oak barrels, from which it absorbs the spicy oak notes and its rich golden color.
