However, the 21st century Amber Empire eau de toilette, created by perfumer Maurice Roucel, is not so much exotic as cosmopolitan, contemporary, and devilishly sensual. Sculpted from a precious amber accord, Amber Empire is a moody and atmospheric scent, steamy and lingering, an oriental nouveau fragrance that combines the old world with the new. A fresh, citrusy top note of bergamot combines with Chinese magnolia and oolong tea before giving way to a base of vanilla, myrrh, ambroxine, and musk. The oolong tea, so prized in Chinese tea rituals, possesses a distinctive delicate floral and earthy greenness and, together with a surprisingly pure concentration of white musk (70%), transforms the amber notes into a fascinating floral and utterly vaporous aura. This particular construction gives Amber Empire an ambivalent sensuality, as rich as amber and as light as the steam rising from the tea.
